ESPN Has Jumped The Shark
Vick conceded to funding Bad Newz Kennelz and that the proceeds went to his co-defendants, but claims he didn't reap monetary benefit. Furthermore, he admitted he knew gambling was taking place and that dogs "died as a result of the collective efforts of Purnell Peace, Quanis Phillips, and Vick himself."
...You want to call yourself the "Worldwide Leader"??? I mean, that's what you refer to yourself at every moment possible, right? How about getting quite possibly the biggest story in sports, since the OJ Simpson trial, correct? ESPN...you butchered this ordeal beyond belief. For the past month, you have continuously flip-flopped sides/opinions/facts relating to nearly every issue surrounding the Vick matter. Your sources suck! And, while I'm at it...do yourself a favor, and permanently remove Roger Cossack from your airwaves. As a legal correspondent, he brings absolutely nothing to the table. In every interview, he backtracks upon his previous statements. He's the Sean Salisbury of lawyers...only Cossack's act is real, and not schtick. I can't decide what's worse.
And, how about Jamie Foxx??? Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Jamie Foxx, but that doesn't change the fact that Foxx is a very stupid man. First Clinton Portis, then Stephon Marbury, then Roy Jones Jr., and now Jamie Foxx. In the end, they all backpedal like Cossack...and provide a rehearsed and meaningless apology.
"I used to see dog fighting in the neighborhood all the time. I didn't know that was Fed time. So, Mike probably just didn't read his handbook on what not to do as a black star."
Where to start?? Why do 99% of black stars (Jamie Foxx's words, not mine) feel the need to continue their "gully" acts once they become superstars. Once you're a star, why must "black stars" continue to live their lives as if they are always searching that almighty "street cred"?? You've already made it...who the hell cares what the Compton Crips think of you? The gang-bangers would give anything to switch positions with you, so why act like the roles should be reversed? Congratulations, Stanley Williams respects you. What's more marketable...the "street cred" that comes with Pacman Jones or the dignity that follows the likes of Tiger Woods and Dwyane Wade?

Wahhhhhhhh...I Wanna Be Paid Like a Top 10 Pick....Wahhhhhhhhhh

Hey Brady....does someone want their binky? What's the matter, A.J. Hawk's sister isn't giving you all the TLC you need in the bedroom? I'm sure to take a lot of heat for this post, since I know there are tons of you that suck Notre Dame's d*ck for no apparent reason. Ughhhhhh, we get it, some of you are Irish and Catholic and think you're somehow a part of the Notre Dame tradition. Our Lady of Victory doesn't give a damn about any of you losers....which is why I plan on ripping into Brady Quinn for a few minutes, while your Holy Water tears stream down your face.
Who does this little pretty boy think he is? The 22nd player overall in the draft wants to be paid a contract that has the potential to pay him top 5-10 money????? The Browns want Quinn to sign a contract that is performance driven, while Baby Brady's camp is forcing a deal at the Browns that would hit significant incentives, should Quinn just play. Sure, smart negotiating by the agents, but this isn't helping anyone here. This kid needs to get to camp and get some reps with the veterans, before they turn their backs on him. Quinn's posse wants a deal based on snaps and reps that would make his contract the 9th most valuable in the draft if THE MINIMUM level of incentives are reached. A deal that at max value could reach $30 million, and at a minimum value, would reach $20 million.....guaranteed. FYI....Joe Thomas (that guy that the Browns drafted with the 3rd overall pick this year, only has $22-23 million in guarantees based on the deal he signed).
So what gives you the right, Brady? You were drafted at #22 for a reason. Nobody needed you. It's supply versus demand.....so sign your friggin' deal and be happy the Browns made enough moves to keep you as a first round pick in the first place. As my good friend, The Assistant Coach, said in the movie Dazed and Confused..."What? Quarterbacks don't have to do what the coaches tell them to do?" Grow up Quinn, take the binky out of your mouth, and prove to all your loyal ND fans that you are the next coming of Christ....just as they've panned you out to be.
Oh, Rick Mirer says "hi", guys.

Bill Walsh Loses Battle With Leukemia

The Win Column sends its condolences to the friends, family, and former teammates of legendary football coach Bill Walsh, who lost his battle with leukemia today at the age of 75. Elected as a Hall-of-Famer in 1993, Walsh won 3 championships with the San Francisco 49ers (1981, 1984, 1988), and is responsible for drafting three of the greatest players ever to play their respective positions in Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, and Ronnie Lott.
Walsh completely changed the game of football with his vertical passing philosophy. "The West Coast Offense" completely changed both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Not only did Walsh win championships with the offense, but coaches he groomed and taught have won numerous championships using much of the same philosophy (see chart above - in order to enlarge it, click on the chart). The game of football will forever be a better game because Bill Walsh left his mark on the sport.
And don't even get me started on his Sega Genesis game....Bill Walsh's College Football was lights out. Bo Jackson was unstoppable with Auburn '83. Rest in peace, Bill Walsh.

This One Goes Out to My Ex-Roommate
- The former backup Syracuse guard was named to the Syracuse University Board of Trustees in 2002, the youngest to ever do so (at Syracuse).
- McNabb is the second least intercepted quarterback per pass attempt in NFL history, behind only Neil O'Donnell. McNabb's career ratio is 1 interception for every 45.26 pass attempts, while O'Donnell was intercepted only once every 47.49 pass attempts.

The NFL Loves More Bush

Scout.com's Adam Caplan is reporting that the Oakland Raiders and rookie RB Michael Bush have agreed on a four year deal that includes a signing bonus of approximately $500,000. Terms on the meat and potatoes portion of the four-year deal have not yet been disclosed.
Where do I begin ? I could start by telling all of you mutts that Michael Bush will be one of the best running backs in the NFL within the next four years. Yes, he is that good. He is 6'2", 243 pounds, runs a 4.5 40-yard dash (once the leg fully heals...ran a 4.6 on a newly healed leg), and has absolutely ridiculous hands. How do I know that he has the intangibles? Maybe the fact that I bet on Louisville to cover, with the over 90% of the entire 2005 college football season. Nothing makes you analyze a game more than having more money on the game than you do in your checking account. I pretty much sweat Louisville Cardinal red from September to January, and I don't plan on stopping now. Give Bush some time to adapt to the NFL game....let him get his feet wet behind Lamont Jordan....let him get fully healthy....and watch out. Don't worry about the broken leg...they are easier to come back from than torn ligaments...and there are countless amounts of backs that have succeeded after surgery.
Look out Reggie....there's about to be some more Bush on Sportscenter. This guy is a winner.

Curtis "My Favorite" Martin to Announce He's Hangin' Up the Spikes

An article in today's New York Post states that former New England Patriots and current New York Jets running back Curtis Martin will announce his retirement later this week. Martin is doing the classy thing here and voiding the final two years of his contract in 2008 and 2009 where he was set to earn millions, and will reduce his 2007 salary from $3.25 million to the NFL veteran minimum salary of $820,000. Martin hasn't been active on a game day since Week 13 of the 2005 NFL season (ironically, against the Patriots in New England) due to a chronic bone-on-bone knee condition.
Curtis, let me be the first member of The Win Column to thank you for your three years of service here in New England. You were an absolute beast in 1995 and 1996, and helped get the Patriots back to their first Super Bowl since the 1985 season. Martin's career numbers are absolutely sick:
168 career games (166 started)
3518 rushing attempts
14,101 rushing yards - 4th All-Time
10 straight 1,000 yard rushing seasons (matched only by Barry Sanders)
4.0 Yds/Rush Avg.
100 Total Touchdowns (90 rushing, 10 receiving)
A first ballot Hall-of-Famer when eligible in 2011, and a total class act on the football field....Curtis Martin did it all the right way. Hopefully, he stays within the game of football to show some of the degenerates, that currently play, the right way to carry themselves within the lines.

Will Mike Vick and Mark Cuban Unite?
If you can recall a few months back, the UFL is a professional Ameican football league being organized by Bill Hambrecht, a Wall Street investor and former minority partner in the USFL's Oakland Invaders, and Tim Armstrong, a senior executive at Google. At it stands now, Mark Cuban has agreed to purchase a franchise for $30 million (reportedly in Las Vegas). Cuban has said that he believes that the league will fill its rosters with quality players that go late in the NFL draft, undrafted free agents, and/or players that are released by NFL teams (insert Mike Vick here).
Sports Illustrated's Peter King proposes the following in today's "Monday Morning QB"...
"I wondered this week if that new football league -- you know, the Mark Cuban league -- would take Vick as its marquee player. Don't scoff. Imagine the TV ratings that league would get with Vick quarterbacking the New York Whoevers on Opening Night 2009."
...Let's face it, Mike Vick's NFL days are virtually over. I mean, it's the Fed's that have charged him over the "Bad Newz Kennels". When indicted by the Fed's, the defendant's success rate (in defending himself/herself) is less than 5%. These are the facts. State charges can be beaten...federal charges are no joke!
Wasn't it Mark Cuban that explained Kobe's pending trail in the following manner...
"All press is good press."
Just saying....

Leave This One Alone, Chucky

Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune is reporting that the Buccaneers have met with free agent Daunte Culpepper to discuss a potential incentive laden contract. Culpepper was in Tampa on Thursday to meet with Head Coach John Gruden and other Tampa officials. Daunte was granted his release from the Dolphins earlier this week, after failing to catch on in the city where the HEAT is on. On the surface, the Bucs don't appear to really need much help at the quarterback position (as they currently hold 5 QB's on their active roster including Jeff Garcia, Chris Simms, Jake Plummer, and Brad Gradkowski), but John Gruden has never met a talented veteran he wouldn't consider working with.
Ok, seriously, Johnny Boy....leave this one alone. Daunte Culpepper sucks. He's God awful. He'll have you smashing your play sheet to the ground, and I'll have to look at that miserable scowl on your face all game, as the cameras focus in on your ugly lid and call you "Chucky." Take it from someone that watched Culpepper attempt to rejuvenate his career in the AFC East.......he's a washed up B-U-M. He tries to do too much....often creating turnovers....which is exactly the opposite of what your team needs. That is why you signed Jeff Garcia. He's a field general that makes minimal mistakes, and tends not to force the issue with turnovers. So, you could say he's the opposite of that mongoloid you hosted in Tampa on Thursday.

Can Someone Please Hire Me....

Corey Dillon has basically been begging for a job for the past 6 months....all with zero success. Most recently, he told the media that he "liked" the Dolphins. He's also "liked" the Titans, Chiefs, Raiders, Browns, and Eagles. I actually feel bad for Corey Dillon....but he's wayyyyyyy past his prime. Two years ago, he was running over people at an alarming rate and was just an absolute beast for my beloved Pats. He's out of gas though. He's now a backup or change-of-pace back for a couple series a game. Last year, he went down on the first hit easier than I go down after my 11th Bacardi and Diet. Just retire Dillon for f*cks sake....don't embarrass yourself and stick around longer than you have to. You've got your ring.....and you pretty much did the unthinkable when you showed up to New England....you kept your mouth shut and played hard. Don't let us down.

God Bless the Priest

Per Rotoworld, Priest Holmes does not plan on playing football again. However, being the savvy business man that Priest is, he'll continue to see spine specialists and doctors at the expense of the Chiefs, in order to protect his $10 million dollar "pro-rated" signing bonus, along with the 4 year/$20 million dollar contract extension he signed in 2003 that is set to expire after the 2009 season.
Good for you, Priest....you're sitting back and getting paid. You risked your life day in/day out, and suffered a fairly serious injury....so I honestly don't think that you should have to lose a dime of that fat contract you signed. Kansas City pretty much wore you into the dirt during the seasons of 2001-2003, as you had 327, 313, and 320 rushes, respectvely, in each of those seasons. His total numbers during this period of time were just absolutely filthy....especially in 2002/2003 where he might have had the two best years a running back has ever had...back-to-back.

Imagine the year he would have had in 2004 if it weren't cut short due to injury? He rushed for almost 900 yards and 14 TD's in the FIRST HALF OF THE SEASON!!!!!!!!!!! Although his career as an every day back was cut short and sweet, watching Holmes do his signature touchdown dance a few times each weekend was worth the price of admission. Not too shabby from a kid that was an undrafted free agent out of Texas.
Should he ever step foot on a football field again, I hope he can become a two-headed beast of an attack with LJ, but I just don't see him risking another spinal cord injury to do so. Sit back, get paid, and watch the Kansas City run another one of their running backs into the ground....as they don't believe in the "Hey, can I get a breather?" technique.
You play to win the game....you play to win the game.

Tony Gonzalez is a Man of The People
"We're not signing any papers," Gonzalez told her, "but I wanted the world to know that I love her and want to spend my life with her. I did it the best way for me."
Mr. Gonzalez, you and I feel exactly the same way. As the saying goes, "brilliant minds think alike". What purpose does marriage serve?? When married, do you automatically begin to love your significant other that much more?? NO!!!!! Marriage is a title which serves little-to-no purpose, other than future headaches (and from what I'm told, changes in behavioral patterns). Marriage is the accepted principle because it's the "norm". I've got news for ya...the people that make it big are the one's that do NOT follow the norm, instead they think outside the box. Quite frankly, the people that always follow the norm are FOLLOWERS. More often than not, these are the same people which live dull day-to-day lives.
I'm only assuming here, but it looks as if Gonzalez may have learned from some previous mistakes (he has a son from a previous relationship). Tony G, you've started a revolution...and I thank you for it.
If someone can somehow locate some photos of October Russell, feel free to drop us a line at thewincolumn@gmail.com. Your efforts are much appreciated!

It's Football Friday...
On the moment the Dolphins passed on Brady Quinn to take Ted Ginn Jr. in the draft: “I was sick to my stomach. On draft day, I had just played golf with Dan Marino and was doing a radio show in Miami [by cellphone] as I was driving home. Atlanta had just picked, the Dolphins were on the clock, and I said [on the air], ‘Just walk up there and pick Brady Quinn — it’s a no-brainer.’ Right as I pulled up in my driveway, the commissioner got to the podium and kind of paused before he read the name, like even he couldn’t believe it. I was like, Oh, s---, I’m going to look like an idiot.”
Then, a week before the Dolphins completed a June 6th trade with Kansas City for quarterback Trent Green, who missed eight games following a severe concussion last September and turns 37 next month, Taylor tells SI: “This is off-the--record—oh, what the hell, it’s on the record: He’d better not get hit. One big hit, and he could be scrambled eggs.”

Pete Prisco Sucks
Anyways, here is Prisco's annual list of the NFL's Top 50 Players (which he puts zero research into -- it's almost as if these names were drawn from a hat):
Lee Evans at #36????? Prisco has a hard-on for the most useless position in the game. This must be a joke meant to drive me crazy.
