Should They Pay Him, Let Him Play "Franchised" for a Year.... or Let Him Walk.....

Although there have been conflicting reports today on whether or not the Patriots and CB Asante Samuel are close on reaching a long-term deal....I feel it's necessary to weigh in on the situation. Samuel said over the weekend that he doesn't plan on holding out through the entire training camp....mostly because of his franchise tag that will pay him a cool $7.79 million this season. I'd say that's a pretty decent reason to show up. Should they not sign him, the Pats would probably just franchise him again next season, and we'd have to listen to this saga all over again.

So I throw it out to you. Should they sign him to a long-term deal now? Let him play for the $7.79 million and THEN sign him/let him walk? Trade him? Personally, I trust that whatever the front office is planning to do is the right move. But I happen to think Asante Samuel is one hell of a defender, and has keen instincts on getting to where the ball WILL BE, even before the receiver. Those instincts aren't really taught, and are tough to come by in today's NFL cornerback. My vote is to lock him up at decent money now, or let him play out the season at $7.79 million and let him walk after. What's yours?

Asante is a slightly above average CB, but I could rattle off AT LEAST 10-15 corners that are definitively better than Samuel...even with Samuel's career-season withstanding.

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY ASANTE IS WORTH NATE CLEMENTS MONEY. If Clements is varsity, then Samuel isn't even starting on the JV squad.

The only Boston athlete more overrated in Boston than Samuel is Paul Pierce.

Samuel defines the term "system player". He's much better in zone schemes, where he can afford to take more risks. As far as a cover corner, he's no better than a C/C+.

As I swamped now, I'm going to bombard this site with posts on the evening shift tonight...

paul pierce isnt overrated at all. in fact, hes my idol. ill marry him. i would. i am male too. my cocksize wouldnt indicate that i am a male but i am. and i like rollerblading. so what? its fun and a workout to boot.

Believe me, I bleed "Green"...Paul Pierce has become one-dimensional.

Dribble, dribble, dribble, dribble, dribble to the top of the key...and force the issue.

Or....18-20 foot fadeaway.

Pierce's best skill set is his rebounding from the wing. Yup, you guessed it - he's overrated. Hence, the reason no GM besides Ainge has ever valued him as a top 15 talent. He has always been in that 17-25 range. Yet, Boston would like you to believe that he's comparable to Kobe & the likes.

dribble dribble dribble, what celtics games are you watching?

The ones in which Pierce plays 1-on-5 for 38 minutes every night.

The ones which have led to countless losses in the East, no less...FOR YEARS.

The ones in which he dribbles more than anyone in the league, other than AI and Kobe.

If I had the talent ainge surrounded him with I too would play 1 on 5.

Ainge screwed this team up in the first place, he is responsible for the losses, not pierce.

The one year he had some veteran's on the team he took them to the Eastern Conference Finals!

I've come around to agree with you that Ainge is clearly the primary culprit...but that's not the debate at hand. It doesn't change the fact that Pierce is overrated. A "superstar" doesn't allow "his" team to qualify for the lottery year-after-year-after-year.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't one of the main reasons you dislike Kobe b/c he goes 1-on-5???

Only difference is...Kobe wins a lot more - IN THE WEST!

Kobe w/ Ray Allen, Big Al, & Rondo contends for a title. Pierce with the aforementioned contends for a playoff spot in the East.

I won't get into why I hate kobe...thats a another post.

I'm just saying that I don't think pierce is as overrated as you think he is. Obviously we are a little biased in Boston but the years he had some veteran help we were easily a playoff team. When he was surrounded by high schoolers we entered the lottery. The same would happen with every superstar in this league.

kevin garnett hasnt done shit in minnesota either so i guess he is overrated too? he is the top paid player in the game and top 3 easy in the league and hasnt done dick in his career so he must be overrated too. or we can just blame mchale.

KG is top 3 in the NBA??? Laughable.

Nowhere even close to Duncan, Kobe, and Lebron. Nowhere even close.

Wade, Nowitzki, Nash, and Carmelo are all definitively better players as well.

no chance. carmelo is not better than kg. dirk isnt either. both of them are abortions on defense and dont make anyone around them better. kg plays average defense and his teams suck every year pretty much but he is still nasty. carmelo isnt even in his league. what would be really great would be if chieftain could go get me a bunch of stats and rattle them off about how he is right and i am wrong. thats what im really looking for here. i cant wait to see stats. i cant sleep at nite until i get my stats from chieftain. kobe lebron duncan yes....carmelo and dirk no chance. and f*ck nash. i dont feel like talking about that little fag.
