Dan Rodricks Is A Big Fat Turd

From Dan Rodricks at The Sun in Baltimore:

Here's my prediction: Red Sox will choke. It's going to get really ugly. It's going to be historic. The Curse Resurrectio. They'll not only lose the AL East. They won't get a wild-card bid. Yanks will finish first in the East, the Tigers in the Central and the Angels in the West. The Indians will be the wild-card. The Orioles will make a run and finish strong -- edging out the Jays and the Sox into second place right behind the Yankees. There, it's done. I said it. I'm gonna live with it. I've started the Bosox Choke Watch.

He goes on to say in a later post:

All together, Orioles fans, let's gather around your MASN tonight and send our collective orange-and-black karma to Boston with the Birds so they have a lovely run against the Sox, who we are eager to see choke again. Remember, this is what that franchise is notorious for. (The Orioles haven't won a World Series in 24 years, but they've been in six since 1966 and won three of them. The Red Sox have only won one Series in nearly 90 years. Never has a franchise gotten so much hype for such little achievement, and who have the Sox put into the Hall of Fame lately?)

Anyway, we're rooting for our Orioles, and hoping the Sox return to their old ways. Can't happen, you say? In 1978, what was the Sox lead over the Yankees at the All-Star break? 14 games? Yeah, somethin' like that. Something sick. And hopefully it will happen again.

The worst thing about this fat turd is that he is originally from East Bridgewater and went to college in Connecticut. How 'bout a little hometown love? Not to mention his remarks about HIS Orioles! "They'll make a run and finish strong" -- what the hell is that supposed to mean? They stink worse than last weeks diapers. I'm pretty sure any decent high school team in the country could give them a run for their money. Anyways, I'm confident that we have some of the smartest, most articulate readership out there, and if these above comments grind your gears as much as they did mine, I've included ole' Danny's email below...

2007 NBA Mock Draft (Version 3.0)

It's late, and I cannot sleep (especially because we were acknowledged on Deadspin (http://deadspin.com/sports/blogdome/heres-why-usc-is-so-good-at-recruiting-272627.php) earlier today...yes, Deadspin - the #1 sports blog in the country. As I write this, it should be noted that I have acquired the sickest tan known to mankind in the last 48 hours...by way of using not even a drop of sunscreen.

I'm going to make these lottery selections short and sweet. I'll be back on in the morning to finish off picks #15 - 30 (I need to sleep on some of the forthcoming decisions).

1. Portland - Greg Oden, C
2. Seattle - Kevin Durant, SF
3. Atlanta - Al Horford, PF (between Horford & Yi)
4. Memphis - Mike Conley, PG (other possibilities include Horford, Brewer, & Noah)
5. Boston - Yi Jianlian, PF (between Yi, Brewer, & Green)
6. Milwaukee - Jeff Green, SF
7. Minnesota - Corey Brewer, SF
8. Charlotte - Brandan Wright, PF (this pick is almost surely to be traded, so this move could potentially throw a wrench into everything)
9. Chicago - Joakim Noah, PF
10. Sacramento - Spencer Hawes, C
11. Atlanta - Acie Law, PG (unless this pick is traded, this selection SHOULD be a lock)
12. Philadelphia - Al Thornton, SF (the Sixers desperately want to move up, as they have 3 1st Round picks to dangle)
13. New Orleans - Thaddeus Young, SF
14. LA Clippers - Julian Wright, SF (Quite honestly, I have no idea which way Clippers management will lean towards at this spot -- they clearly need shooting, and a lot of it...which would make Nick Young a logical selection. On the other hand, Georgia Tech's Javaris Crittenton also must be considered here, as Shaun Livingston's career is in limbo. If one potential stud is to drop in this draft, it will wrongfully be Julian Wright.)

The NBA Draft is here, and I couldn't be more pumped for it (to see my previous mock drafts, click the below links)!! Bring on the wings and beers!

Lights out for this guy! My story about my run-in with Peter Manfredo, Jr. on Tuesday will have to wait until later...

Dan Shaughnessy Interview

You think I'm smug?? Then, get a load of Firecrotch's (aka, "Curly Haired Boyfriend") interview with Eagle in Atlanta. After all, the ugliest human in Boston recently penned a book about his own son's high school baseball prowess (or lack thereof). To read in entirety, click below.

http://atleagle.blogspot.com/2007/06/dan-shaughnessy-interview.html

The last few questions went as follows...

ATL_eagle: One last question and being a blogger, I have to ask about this. I asked Bob Ryan about blogs and the future of the industry a year ago. He jokingly waived the white flag. Now the guy went out and got his own blog. And you famously mocked Curt Schilling’s blog. What do you see as the future of this new medium and how it effects sports writing and sports coverage?

DS: I think it is nice for everyone to have a voice. Pete Hamel has a quote (and I had him on the radio last week) and he said, “blogging is therapy but it’s not journalism.” And that’s from Pete Hamel. Certainly there’s just no editing process. There’s no vetting of material. I draw a real line at anonymity versus people having their name on there like yourself…I assume you do since I am talking to you.

ATL_eagle: Funny enough, I started off with just a nickname. Then the Atlanta Journal-Constitution featured me in their College Football Preview and I unveiled myself and now I write for AOL too with a byline.

DS: To me, except for the editing process, that’s legit. And that’s where it’s going. I just don’t have a lot of affinity for anonymous tough guys who kill everyone and we don’t know who they are. It’s just too easy. It’s the new crank phone call at that level. But when a name’s on there and they stand behind what they write then I think it’s great.

...Dan, I've got news for you -- the only reason you have a "name" is because you have ignited countless feuds against yourself (the essence of self-promotion). Your writing is sub-par...and your analysis has become non-existent. Admit it - you have an agenda, and you'll backpedal at any cost. Sound right?

If you need to find me, just ask around for Chieftain. Jacka$$.

Pete Prisco Sucks

Pete Prisco is a jacka$$. Scratch that, CBS Sportsline (as a whole) is just awful. It's got to be the least informative sports site out there. They are always a day late and a dollar short. They bring nothing to the table.

Anyways, here is Prisco's annual list of the NFL's Top 50 Players (which he puts zero research into -- it's almost as if these names were drawn from a hat):

Call me crazy, but where is...Adalius Thomas, Brian Westbrook, Brian Dawkins, Nate Clements, Rudi Johnson, Troy Polamalu, Zach Thomas, and Alan Faneca???

Newsflash...DeAngelo Hall sucks. He can't cover a cold via man-to-man. He is all individual hype...no substance.

Lee Evans at #36????? Prisco has a hard-on for the most useless position in the game. This must be a joke meant to drive me crazy.

Chad Johnson at #7 overall (he's not even the best WR in the game) and Andre Johnson at #14 overall (whaaaaaaaat??), but Stephen Jackson only checks in at #29?????? I'm dumbfounded.

Tony Gonzalez makes the list, but Shaun Alexander doesn't??? These days, Tony Gonzalez is as productive as Nightmare on a Saturday morning.

It goes without saying that I have many more opinions on this list, but I'll let you guys have at it initially...

Deadspin's Interview With Harold Reynolds

As I'm sure you've heard by now, Harold Reynolds recently signed a new 2-year contract with MLB.com (starting after the All-Star break).

Allow me to take this time to say that "HR" was Baseball Tonight. At times, Baseball Tonight (headlined by the likes of John Kruk, Orestes Destrade, Steve Phillips, and Orel Hershiser...the All-Stiff Team) is now unwatchable. The content of baseball is still intact, but the analysis and programming now sucks! Harold's true worth to ESPN has been overwhelmingly evident this year, as he surely has been missed.

In order to see Deadspin's entire sit-down, follow the jump...

As I was discussing with Orlando this past weekend, The Win Column simply needs to break one story...and we'll be universal. And, don't think I'm not on this (as I'll be on vacation in the coming weeks, I'm seriously considering tracking/stalking Pacman Jones' strip club escapades)!! Just this past Friday, I bombarded my way into Coco Crisp's VIP booth for this sole purpose...sending his "bodyguards" into mass hysteria. After a few seconds of giving him the "urban" handshake and shooting the sh*t with him, I drunkenly came to the realization that I was wasting my time. It was Coco Crisp for Christ's sake! He sucks. I could've landed pictures of him munching on Suds' box...and the world would have still been disinterested. End of rant - just know that I seek results.

Borges' Back In The News

According to AOL Sports...

Ron Borges, the Boston Globe sports writer known for his love of boxing, dislike of Bill Belichick, and use of work from other writers without proper attribution, has retired from the paper. Borges, who is on the Pro Football Hall of Fame's selection committee (and will presumably be replaced), is often referred to as a "journalistic enigma" and is despised by large numbers of Boston sports fans.

On the other hand, sometimes the most-despised columnists are the ones who are most effective at getting their messages across. That's why there will be many other outlets interested in Borges' services. His next employer might very well be Oscar De La Hoya -- Borges wrote for a De La Hoya-owned web site during his recent suspension from the Globe. We haven't seen the last of Borges, just the last of Borges with the Globe.

My little rant...It's obvious that Borges' columns had an agenda -- it was to ruffle the general public's feathers. It's called schick. Although his work was often viewed as a nuisance, his work also provided a sense of refreshing relief. Why? Because I don't respect journalists that sit on the fence (I've never understood this)...you have center stage, make use of it! Provide me with your real feelings about a particular subject. I may not always agree with your insight...but in the end, you will have garnered more of my respect.

My question to the readers...who will now represent the area's (football) Hall of Fame vote -- Mike Reiss or Felger??

Shock & Awe

Per today's Kansas City Star...Jason Whitlock, in typical brilliant fashion, has gotten to the crux of the matter which surrounds Don Imus (see his below piece).

Thank you, Don Imus. You’ve given us (black people) an excuse to avoid our real problem.

You’ve given Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson another opportunity to pretend that the old fight, which is now the safe and lucrative fight, is still the most important fight in our push for true economic and social equality.

You’ve given Vivian Stringer and Rutgers the chance to hold a nationally televised recruiting celebration expertly disguised as a news conference to respond to your poor attempt at humor.

T
hank you, Don Imus. You extended Black History Month to April, and we can once again wallow in victimhood, protest like it’s 1965 and delude ourselves into believing that fixing your hatred is more necessary than eradicating our self-hatred.

The bigots win again.

While we’re fixated on a bad joke cracked by an irrelevant, bad shock jock, I’m sure at least one of the marvelous young women on the Rutgers basketball team is somewhere snapping her fingers to the beat of 50 Cent’s or Snoop Dogg’s or Young Jeezy’s latest ode glorifying nappy-headed pimps and hos.

I ain’t saying Jesse, Al and Vivian are gold-diggas, but they don’t have the heart to mount a legitimate campaign against the real black-folk killas.

It is us. At this time, we are our own worst enemies. We have allowed our youths to buy into a culture (hip hop) that has been perverted, corrupted and overtaken by prison culture. The music, attitude and behavior expressed in this culture is anti-black, anti-education, demeaning, self-destructive, pro-drug dealing and violent.

Rather than confront this heinous enemy from within, we sit back and wait for someone like Imus to have a slip of the tongue and make the mistake of repeating the things we say about ourselves.

It’s embarrassing. Dave Chappelle was offered $50 million to make racially insensitive jokes about black and white people on TV. He was hailed as a genius. Black comedians routinely crack jokes about white and black people, and we all laugh out loud.

I’m no Don Imus apologist. He and his tiny companion Mike Lupica blasted me after I fell out with ESPN. Imus is a hack.

But, in my view, he didn’t do anything outside the norm for shock jocks and comedians. He also offered an apology. That should’ve been the end of this whole affair. Instead, it’s only the beginning. It’s an opportunity for Stringer, Jackson and Sharpton to step on victim platforms and elevate themselves and their agenda$.

I watched the Rutgers news conference and was ashamed.

Martin Luther King Jr. spoke for eight minutes in 1963 at the March on Washington. At the time, black people could be lynched and denied fundamental rights with little thought. With the comments of a talk-show host most of her players had never heard of before last week serving as her excuse, Vivian Stringer rambled on for 30 minutes about the amazing season her team had.

Somehow, we’re supposed to believe that the comments of a man with virtually no connection to the sports world ruined Rutgers’ wonderful season. Had a broadcaster with credibility and a platform in the sports world uttered the words Imus did, I could understand a level of outrage.

But an hourlong press conference over a man who has already apologized, already been suspended and is already insignificant is just plain intellectually dishonest. This is opportunism. This is a distraction.

In the grand scheme, Don Imus is no threat to us in general and no threat to black women in particular. If his words are so powerful and so destructive and must be rebuked so forcefully, then what should we do about the idiot rappers on BET, MTV and every black-owned radio station in the country who use words much more powerful and much more destructive?

I don’t listen or watch Imus’ show regularly. Has he at any point glorified selling crack cocaine to black women? Has he celebrated black men shooting each other randomly? Has he suggested in any way that it’s cool to be a baby-daddy rather than a husband and a parent? Does he tell his listeners that they’re suckers for pursuing education and that they’re selling out their race if they do?

When Imus does any of that, call me and I’ll get upset. Until then, he is what he is — a washed-up shock jock who is very easy to ignore when you’re not looking to be made a victim.

No. We all know where the real battleground is. We know that the gangsta rappers and their followers in the athletic world have far bigger platforms to negatively define us than some old white man with a bad radio show. There’s no money and lots of danger in that battle, so Jesse and Al are going to sit it out.
